How much to save each paycheck for Christmas 2026 (weekly, biweekly, twice a month)
The easiest way to pay for the holidays without a January credit card bill is to split the total over the paychecks you have left. Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, so a payday due on December 25 will usually come early or late, and either way it's too late for shopping. The tables below count only paydays up to Friday, December 18. To set the total first, use the Christmas budget calculator.
Paydays left, starting in October
| How you're paid | Paydays up to Dec 18 | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly (Fridays) | 12 | Oct 2 to Dec 18 |
| Every two weeks, starting Oct 2 | 6 | Oct 2, 16, 30; Nov 13, 27; Dec 11 |
| Every two weeks, starting Oct 9 | 6 | Oct 9, 23; Nov 6, 20; Dec 4, 18 |
| Twice a month (15th and last day) | 5 | Oct 15, 31; Nov 15, 30; Dec 15 |
| Monthly (1st) | 3 | Oct 1, Nov 1, Dec 1 |
Pay dates that fall on a weekend usually move to the Friday before; the count doesn't change.
How much to set aside from each paycheck
Rounded up to the cent, so you reach the goal.
| Holiday total | Weekly (12) | Every 2 weeks (6) | Twice a month (5) | Monthly (3) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $500 | $41.67 | $83.34 | $100.00 | $166.67 |
| $800 | $66.67 | $133.34 | $160.00 | $266.67 |
| $1,000 | $83.34 | $166.67 | $200.00 | $333.34 |
| $1,500 | $125.00 | $250.00 | $300.00 | $500.00 |
| $2,000 | $166.67 | $333.34 | $400.00 | $666.67 |
| $3,000 | $250.00 | $500.00 | $600.00 | $1,000.00 |
What waiting until November costs
Starting with November's first payday leaves 7 weekly paydays, and 3 or 4 biweekly ones depending on your schedule. For a $1,000 goal:
| How you're paid | Start in October | Start in November |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | $83.34 × 12 | $142.86 × 7 |
| Every two weeks, starting Oct 2 | $166.67 × 6 | $333.34 × 3 (Nov 13, 27; Dec 11) |
| Every two weeks, starting Oct 9 | $166.67 × 6 | $250.00 × 4 (Nov 6, 20; Dec 4, 18) |
On the Oct 2 biweekly schedule, a one-month delay doubles what each paycheck has to cover.
Making it stick
- Move it on payday, not at the end of the month. A separate savings account, or an automatic transfer set for the day after each payday, keeps it from being spent.
- Buy early gifts from the fund, not a card. Then the fund's balance always shows what's left.
- Don't forget the extras. Wrapping, shipping, travel, food and hosting often add as much as a few gifts. The Christmas budget example lists them.
Every payday was counted from the 2026 calendar (all weekly and biweekly dates checked to be Fridays) and every amount is the total ÷ paydays, rounded up to the cent. Not financial advice.
