How to calculate the true cost of a handmade item (ring, bracelet and candle examples)
Most makers know roughly what their materials cost. Fewer know what one finished item costs once their time, packaging and Etsy's fees are counted, and that's the number pricing should start from. Here are three real examples from a tested tracker.
Step 1: materials, from a recipe
Write down what goes into one item, then price each material at its weighted average cost: everything you've paid for it divided by everything you've bought. Silver wire bought as 100 g for $118 and then 100 g for $126 averages $1.22 per gram, not whatever the latest invoice says.

Step 2: add your time and packaging
At $20 an hour, 25 minutes on a ring is $8.33, more than its materials. Packaging and the postage label add $1.20.
Step 3: what's left after Etsy

The bracelet sells for the most and earns the least margin: 40 minutes of work and 18 beads eat into it. Without a per-item breakdown, that's easy to miss.
Mistakes that understate cost
- Leaving out your time. If you wouldn't do it for free, it's a cost.
- Using the cheapest price you ever paid. Use the weighted average; prices drift.
- Forgetting the small stuff: jump rings, wicks, tissue paper, labels. Per item it's cents; across a year it adds up.
