How it works
The 50/30/20 rule puts half of your take-home pay toward needs, 30% toward wants and 20% toward savings and extra debt payments. It is a starting point, not a law: in expensive cities needs often run 55 to 60%. Your savings rate here counts what you save, extra debt payments and anything left over.
