52-week savings challenge 2027: full schedule by date, plus 100-envelope and 26-paycheck totals
The classic 52-week savings challenge puts away $1 the first week, $2 the second, and so on up to $52 in the last week — $1,378 in total. Starting on Monday, January 4, 2027 (the first Monday of the year), here's the full schedule by actual date, alongside the two other common challenges and what scaling the amounts up gets you.
Challenge comparison, 2027 start
| Challenge | Deposits | Amounts | 2027 span | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 52-week challenge | 52, weekly | $1 to $52, increasing | Jan 4 – Dec 27 | $1,378.00 |
| 52-week, biggest first | 52, weekly | $52 to $1, decreasing | Jan 4 – Dec 27 | $1,378.00 |
| 100-envelope challenge | 100, daily | $1 to $100, any order | Jan 4 – Apr 13 (100 days) | $5,050.00 |
| 26-paycheck challenge | 26, biweekly | $5 to $130, increasing | Jan 4 – Dec 20 | $1,755.00 |
"Biggest first" saves the same $1,378 as the standard order — it's the same 52 deposits, just front-loaded for when motivation (or a holiday bonus) is highest, with smaller amounts left for December. The 100-envelope challenge doesn't need real dates — you draw envelopes in any order, one a day — so the span above is just 100 days from the same start for comparison.

Started on a different Monday? The deposit amounts and running totals are the same either way — only the calendar dates shift. The free savings challenge calculator rebuilds this table for any start date.
Scaling it up
$1,378 is a start, not a ceiling. Multiplying every deposit by the same factor keeps the same 52 weeks and the same shape — it just raises the top deposit and the total:
| Multiplier | Weekly range | Final week's deposit | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| ×1 (standard) | $1 – $52 | $52.00 | $1,378.00 |
| ×1.5 | $1.50 – $78 | $78.00 | $2,067.00 |
| ×2 | $2 – $104 | $104.00 | $2,756.00 |
| ×3 | $3 – $156 | $156.00 | $4,134.00 |
| ×5 | $5 – $260 | $260.00 | $6,890.00 |
The 100-envelope challenge scales the same way: ×2 ($2 to $200 an envelope) totals $10,100; ×3 ($3 to $300) totals $15,150.
How it's calculated
Each week's deposit is the week number times the base amount ($1 for the standard challenge), so week 23 is $23. The running total is the sum of every deposit so far, which is also the triangular-number formula n(n+1)/2 times the base — week 52's total, $1,378, is 52 × 53 ÷ 2. "Biggest first" uses the same deposits in reverse (week 1 pays what week 52 would). The 26-paycheck challenge starts at $5 and rises by $5 every two weeks; the 100-envelope challenge is the same shape as the 52-week one, just to 100 instead of 52.
If you miss a week
- Catch up by doubling. Add that week's amount to the next one — missing week 10 ($10) just means week 11 becomes $31 instead of $11, and the year still ends at $1,378.
- Starting late still gets you to the same total if you do all 52 deposits; it just finishes 52 weeks after you start rather than by December.
- Prefer flat amounts? The "same amount every time" option (e.g. $20 a week, 52 times) totals $1,040 — lower than the standard challenge, but without a final week that's 52 times the first.
Every figure above comes from the same schedule and rounding as the free savings challenge calculator, which also handles custom amounts, a different number of deposits, and any start date. Not financial advice — just arithmetic.
